Avocado market in the US

After nearly 10 years of negotiations for mango to be officially exported to the US, Vietnam is now stepping up promotion to bring avocados into this difficult but potential market.

According to the US Department of Agriculture (USDA), in 2018 the country spent 2.35 billion USD to import 1.04 million tons of avocado. Avocados are consumed by 51% of households in the US, the average amount of money an American household spends to buy avocados is $24.5 per year.

Vietnam Trade Office branch in the urban center (USA) said. Most avocados within the US are consumed through large supermarkets, in large volumes. Therefore, very high requirements must be met: Avocado suppliers must be responsible and ready to control all stages of the availability chain, from production to distribution; Exporting businesses have to make sure that they need enough quality certificates. Since avocado could be a fruit for immediate consumption, businesses have to pay special attention to food safety factors.

According to the Vietnam Trade Office Branch in the urban center, Vietnam currently has many sorts of avocados that bear fruit most year round. However, the worth of Vietnamese avocados continues to be low because of limitations within the application of science and technology, the assembly scale is fragmented, and therefore the brand and geographical indications haven't been built yet.

Promoting avocado export potential

In order to promote the potential of avocado trees as well as promote avocado exports to new markets, including the US when the market is opened, Vietnam needs to search and select good and quality avocado varieties, high productivity, especially with effective marketing and promotion strategies.

If production is done well, with appropriate investment and market access, avocado can quickly become a crop with high export revenue of our country.

The world's avocado export turnover reached about 6 billion USD in 2017. In which, North America (mainly Mexico) is the largest exporter with more than 50% of the world turnover, the EU accounts for 22, 8% and Latin American countries (except Mexico) accounted for 19.5%. The remaining Africa is about 3.4%, Asia, 1.7% and Oceania topped by New Zealand with 1.6%.
